Love of Film

To be held in Knights of Columbus Hall.  That's a separate building immediately behind the Capitol Theatre.

Coffee is provided but patrons are expected to provide their own lunch - either by bringing it hence the "brown bag" - or ordering it. The surest way to get your lunch is to order in advance by adding the $10 option when you buy your pass.  You make your choice of sandwich at the desk in the lobby of the Capitol before 1:00pm on Saturday.

Speaker Peter Howell

Love of film quote: "A great film is stronger than romance. Even if it doesn't have a happy ending, you'll still leave the theatre swooning."
-- Peter Howell.

Peter Howell is the president of the Toronto Film Critics Association (TFCA). He is also the movie critic for The Toronto Star, a post he's held since 1996. Prior to this he was the Star's rock critic, and he considers himself fortunate to have been paid to indulge his two biggest life obsessions: film and music.

peter howellHowell sees hundreds of movies each year and attends the Toronto, Cannes and Sundance film festivals. He has interviewed many celebrities, including Clint Eastwood, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Catherine Deneuve, Morgan Freeman, Harrison Ford, Wes Anderson,  Claire Denis and every member of the Rolling Stones.

He is a close observer of Canadian film, and in 2012 was a jury member of Canada's Top Ten panel organized by the Toronto International Film Festival.

As well as being president of the 40-member TFCA, a group he co-founded in 1997, Howell is also a member of the Los Angeles-based Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), which awards the annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, considered the most reliable precursor to the Oscars.

His favorite film of all time, since he first saw it at age 13 in 1969 at Toronto's dearly departed Glendale Theatre, is Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

NOTE: This seminar is for holders of Festival Passes only.
