Canadian Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) is on vacation in London, when be gets tangled up with an international spy ring related to the mysterious "39 steps." It doesn't help when agent Annabella Smith (Lucie Mannheim), is killed in his apartment. The Police are after him but he also tries to stop Professor Jordan (Godfrey Tearle) from sending secrets out of the country. Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), helps him albeit unwillingly. One of Hitchcock's best.
